Fall 2024 Part Time Registration is now OPEN
AVA Program
High School Part Time Student
Are you looking to supplement your face-to-face learning experience with core or elective courses?
AVA provides online course options that can be taken during the day. APS students who take AVA online courses are able to maximize their time during the semester to complete their required curriculum. Students receive support from certified teachers via the Live Virtual Learning Center during and beyond the day.
Middle School Part Time Student
Middle school students can take advanced middle school courses and high school courses online.
Credit Recovery Courses
Provides an opportunity for students to retake a high school course in which he/she previously was not academically successful in earning credit towards graduation. The AVA Credit Recovery program allows students to gain mastery in standards in which they are deficient. Students are provided with a pre-assessment and then provided instruction based on standards that have not been mastered. AVA Credit Recovery students will be assigned a content teacher, and if working during the school day, students will have access to a virtual classroom with a content teacher for questions. Once students complete the virtual instructional lesson, they take a post-test in which they must achieve 70% mastery to move forward to the next lesson without being prompted to use additional attempts. Upon earning a passing grade, students are awarded credit for the course. Note: For this option, student's previous final grade of 69% or below must be posted to their transcript before registering.
Note: **Per NCAA guidelines, student athletes CANNOT participate in the Credit Recovery program.
Initial Credit Courses
Lesson/Unit Recovery Courses
AVA Unit Recovery (AVA UR) provides students an opportunity to master the content and recover a unit or lesson, within the current Fall and Spring semesters. Students can recover unlimited units, in multiple courses, at the same time. Unit Recovery is available while taking a course at the student's home school. Classroom teachers assign students virtual units to complete during non-school hours. The previous failed unit grade will be replaced by the recovered unit grade for the course.
All students enrolled in Atlanta Public Schools can recover units and/or lessons. For example: No units can be recovered before or after the current semester. If a student is taking Algebra I during Fall 2023, this student can only recover units for Algebra I during the Fall 2023 semester.
Part Time
Program
The AVA Part-Time Program provides students with total flexibility and choice around their learning through an augmented online experience as part-time students enrolled at any Atlanta Public Middle or High School.
Program Overview
As a program of Atlanta Public Schools, the Atlanta Virtual Academy (AVA) has partnered with APS' traditional middle and high schools to offer all APS middle and high school students an augmented online experience during or beyond the school day. AVA Part-Time students must be enrolled in an APS middle or high school to participate in this program. The cost structure is as follows: courses are available free of charge to APS students enrolled at a traditional campus; however, there are associated fees for Atlanta Public School students enrolled at charter and partner schools.
Delivery Model
Part-Time AVA courses are those offered in conjunction with students’ regularly scheduled courses at their home schools.
These courses can be delivered in two ways:
1. “During the Day,” which indicates that time has been reserved in the students’ schedule to work on their course(s) at school, during the school day.
2. “Beyond the Day,” which indicates that in addition to a full schedule at school, students are enrolled in a course that is expected to be completed after school hours during their free time. Students are limited to taking only one Beyond the Day Initial Credit course per semester unless it is a Credit Recovery course.
Through technology, we connect parents, teachers, and students and allow students 24/7 access to their courses. AVA's certified teachers provide instruction and online communication to assist students with their learning. Parent oversight and involvement are critical for the part-time virtual student. Students can take all their core, world language, AP, CTAE and elective courses online, in their school building, or anytime, anyplace, anywhere outside their school building. Online learners are most successful when they are highly motivated, disciplined, organized, flexible, and willing to troubleshoot.

Parent and Student Expectations

These expectations include but are not limited to:
Final Grade and EOC Testing and Scheduling
A part-time AVA student is scheduled for semester-long courses. If it is an EOC course, students will be scheduled by school personnel to take their Milestone exam. AVA part-time students follow the same testing guidelines and testing calendar as outlined by the district.
