The Atlanta Virtual Academy (AVA) is a fully accredited online learning environment that is available to elementary, middle and high school students at Atlanta Public Schools.
Enrollment acceptance into Atlanta Virtual Academy will be granted for 2023-2024 School Year beginning August 1, 2023. Applications will be accepted online or by appointment at the Department of Student Assignment, located at: 130 Trinity Avenue (2nd Floor), Atlanta, Georgia 30303. Important points to remember:
- AVA is a program, not a school. Therefore, students need to be enrolled at their zone schools to receive an AVA enrollment.
- If your student applies for AVA for Fall 2023, and they are not currently enrolled in an APS school, you will need to complete OLR prior to your student being enrolled for Atlanta Virtual Academy. Failure to complete OLR or remain enrolled at the APS zone school, will result in the AVA enrollment being forfeited.
- Prior to the application deadline, all applications submitted on the last day receive the same consideration as applications submitted on the first day.
- No late applications will be accepted after the application window closes on April 7.
- Students with a 504 and/or IEP will need to have their services reviewed to ensure they can be implemented in a virtual setting.
- Accepting a seat offer into AVA is a semester-long commitment. Therefore, once the parent accepts the seat offer for Fall Semester 2023, they may not return to their zone school until the end of the semester – January 2024.
- AVA families are expected to monitor student progress, productivity and attendance.
- AVA students can participate in extracurricular activities at their home schools.
- AVA students take all national (PSAT, SAT, ACT, AP) and state (EOG, EOC) exams at their home schools.

1. What is an Atlanta Virtual Academy course like?
Students complete lesson activities, homework, class discussions, and tests 100% online. Content is mastered through pre-recorded videos and teachers are virtually available for support when needed. Students must log in daily Monday – Friday to complete coursework. This requires students have access to a working computer and an Internet connection.
2. Are there any face to face meetings?
AVA staff may conduct in person orientations/check-ins at the students home school. However, all AVA courses are 100% online.
3. Who do I contact if I am unable to log in?
Check that you have entered the correct URL to login to your course. Initial Credit and Credit Recovery students should login at atlanta.geniussis.com; Lesson/Unit Recovery students should login at atlanta.learn.edgenuity.com . If your login credentials do not work, speak with your school counselor.
4. Who do I contact if I do not know my login username and password?
Contact your school counselor.
5. When can I drop my AVA course?
Your enrolled course will indicate whether you are a During the Day (DTD) or Beyond the Day (BTD) student.
During the Day (DTD) students CAN NOT drop their AVA course. Beyond the Day students may request to drop before the drop date listed on the application.
6. How often do I have to log in?
You should schedule your work load according to your course pacing guide. All course pacing guides require that you work daily Monday – Friday.
7. Are accommodations made for students with IEPS's or 504 Plans?
Yes. AVA will not discriminate against any qualified individual on the basis of disability. It is the responsibility of the home school to ensure that the system meets all requirements of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and Section 504. The current Individualized Education Program or 504 Plan must be provided to Atlanta Virtual Academy by the home school. Atlanta Virtual Academy will follow all applicable provisions in the IEP or 504 Plan. However, there may be some provisions that can not be implemented. In such a case, the home school must determine whether Atlanta Virtual Academy is an appropriate placement.
8. How many AVA Initial Credit Beyond the Day (BTD) courses can I take online each semester?
Students can take one AVA BTD course per semester.
9. Can I take AVA online courses in middle school?
Middle School students can take online courses each semester. Students must get approval from their school’s administration and counselor. Middle school students can also take courses for high school credits towards graduation. 8th graders may take Algebra I. Personal Fitness and Health are also available the summer prior to the start of their 9th grade year.

11. Do AVA courses meet NCAA eligibility requirements?
AVA Initial Credit courses meet NCAA requirements and are NCAA approved. AVA Credit Recovery courses do not meet NCAA requirements and are not approved for NCAA credits.
12. How does a student or parent communicate with their teacher?
AVA teachers can be contacted by phone, email, text, or the Live Virtual Learning Center (LVLC). Students and parents can access their teachers contact information in Genius by logging into their course and clicking on the Teacher Information tab.
13. How are grades and credits reported at the end of the course and semester?
Atlanta Virtual Academy grades are reported through Genius and Infinite Campus. AVA Initial Credit and Credit Recovery final grades will be posted on the student’s transcript. AVA Unit Recovery final grades will be substituted in Infinite Campus for the replacing unit of study by their home school’s face-to-face teacher.
14. Who teaches the AVA Initial Credit online courses?
All online teachers are Georgia certified Teachers.
15. Who can take online courses and units?
Online course opportunities are offered to PreK-12th grade students enrolled in the district.

17. How do I enroll?
School counselors must enroll students in AVA Initial Credit and Credit Recovery courses. The student's classroom teacher enrolls students for Unit Recovery.
18. Is there an orientation?
The AVA program provides an initial school visit to APS high schools in addition to a virtual orientation provided through Edgenuity. These orientations will give you information about navigating Genius and your course(s) in Edgenuity.
19. Do I need a computer?
During the day (DTD) students will be provided a device, internet, and working space during school hours. If you are taking AVA courses that are not within the school day or beyond the school day (BTD), you will need a laptop and internet to complete your course or units.
20. How do I access the course?
Initial Credit and Credit Recovery students should log in here: www.atlanta.geniussis.com.

Students will use their APS issued Network ID and lunch number to login to their online course.
21. Are online course grades calculated in my GPA?
Yes. If a student does not drop the course by the designated drop period, the grade received will be posted to the student's transcript, calculated in GPA at the appropriate weight, and in class rank.
22. Are online courses harder or easier than face to face courses?
Neither. Online courses must meet or exceed the same state standards as traditional courses. All AVA courses are evaluated for rigor to ensure the standards are met. Distance learning courses require different study skills, which may make the course harder, or easier, depending on the learner.
23. How are textbooks issued?
Only Advanced Placement courses require a textbook. These textbooks will be distributed by the home school’s textbook coordinator.
